History of St. Luke's |
||
| In the Beginning: Twenty five people gathered to worship the Lord in December, 1960 in an abandoned bait house a few miles form the present site of St. Luke's. A reed organ with a vacuum cleaner plugged in the back was scrounged, prayer books were borrowed, chalice and paten loaned, folding chairs were found, and on December 7, 1960 at 5pm the first service was held. | ||

| More people came, a bishop's committee was formed, confirmation classes were held and St. Luke's on the Lake became a mission in the Diocese of Texas. The congregation grew, and with the help of the diocese, bought the present site in 1962. | ||

Rector
1961-1981: St.
Luke's has had only two rectors in its forty-year history. The first, the
Rev. Malcolm P. Riker, not only selected the present site, but also used
St. Luke's as a springboard from which to launch new congregations.
Malcolm Riker's enduring legacy is the Episcopal evangelism he brought to West Austin. |

Rector 1982-2002: In
1982, the Rev. Roland Timberlake answered the call to this church. He not only encouraged the development of small group ministries,
but encouraged members to develop a personal relationship with
Jesus Christ, based on discipleship, stewardship, and Christian
fellowship.
Under Father Timberlake, St. Luke's witnessed twenty years of miraculous growth and strengthening of the Parish. Upon his retirement in 2002, there were over 50 ministries and small groups, which continue as a living legacy of his leadership and service. |
